Why do teeth discolour?

Everyone’s teeth are unique and discolour and stain in different ways. The discolouration or staining of a person’s tooth is typically caused by:

  • Coffee
  • Black tea
  • Herbal tea
  • Red wine
  • Spicy foods such as curry
  • Smoking cigarettes / cigars

How does tooth whitening work?

There are multiple types of tooth whitening solutions available. There are essentially three categories that these fit into including pharmacy available products, Take Home (from dentist) packages and In-dentist clinic applied solutions.

When a whitening product is applied to the tooth, it breaks down into water and oxygen ions. The oxygen ions enter the enamel and attack the long stain molecules to effectively break them down to be short and colourless. These short and colourless molecules are then naturally removed from the tooth by saliva. The intensity of whitening is related to the number of oxygen ions available and the length of time they are on the tooth.

Whitening Strengths

The main difference between these categories of products is the amount of hydrogen peroxide, which is the active ingredient they contain. Carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide over a period of time, but at a lesser strength of active ingredients.

Products can range from as little as 3% all the way up to 37.5%. The amount of active ingredient dictates the strength of the product and the duration required to apply it to your tooth to achieve the desired whitening effect.

Whitening Strengths

In-dentist clinic strength products contain comparatively more active ingredient to achieve the desired whitening effect. These products are administered by dentists to ensure patient safety during the application process.

Your dentist will use a shade guide to identify your tooth colour. They will also use this scale to estimate how many shades whiter you want your tooth. Each type of whitening utilises a unique application technique to protect your tooth and gums during the whitening process and also long term. Some products contain features that actively protect your tooth and gums during the process, and these can be beneficial as they enable you to achieve the desired whitening effect without incurring damage to your tooth or gums. It’s best to seek your dentist’s advice on which whitening product is most suitable for you and approximately how many shades whiter you are able to achieve.

What types of whitening treatments are available?

At Arca Dental we offer 3 different whitening treatments.

  • Express Whitening – this is a great option to freshen up your smile. Taking only 45 minutes in the dentist chair, express whitening is quick and effective. It provides great results and coupled with the take home whitening pen can be a great option just before a special event!
  • Take Home Kits – our dentists believe this is the most effective teeth whitening option. This method involves coming in for an appointment with the dentist to have impressions taken for custom trays to be made for you. You then go home with whitening gel and the trays. These should be used everyday for 30 mins each day for 2 weeks. The trays remain with you and you can always purchase extra whitening gel to top-up your smile every so often.
  • In Chair Whitening – this whitening treatment uses the strongest concentration of gel and is performed by the dentist in the chair. This treatment takes about 90 mins and includes multiple applications of gel which is cured with a blue light. The success of this treatment will depend on the original colour of the teeth as well as the cause of discolouration.

5 star Though I live on a different continent, Dr. Kushal has been a family friend since the beginning of time. Being a dentist here in the US, and swapping dental stories when we all met in the UK, I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Kushal! If I lived there in Australia, I would definitely be a patient there!!!! Looking forward to your many years of success!!! Cheers!

Well had an unexpected visit to dentist today so looked up on Google who to go to . Went to ARCA that was local and my experience was amazing right from reception to dentist Ms. Bolton and even assistant . I get very anxious at the dentist due to many years of orthodontic work , they made me feel comfortable and understood my fears . Didn't cost an arm and a leg either . Very happy customer here and highly recommend them.
